"I want to thank you so much for all you do and what you did to make me feel so appreciated when I was choosen Teacher of the Month for the Dollars for Books program. When I first was notified, I was so happy...not just for myself, but mainly for the beautiful little girl who wrote the letter about me. She is so deserving and needing of this sort of positive attention. You will never know what this has done for her!"
- Jodie Dillman, Neil Dow School, Chico

"As marketing coordinator for Chico Performances, I find that one of the most effective ways to reach parents with information about our family-oriented performances is through North State Parent. They have a wide distribution area and reach a good cross section of people from the north valley. When I want to get more families involved in our performances - I go to North State Parent!"
- Daran L. Goodsell, Marketing/Publicity, Chico Performances, Office of University Public Events, CSU,  Chico

"Thank you so much for producing a great ad for us. I can't begin to tell you about the compliments we have heard about the ad. Extremely well done -- visually pleasing -- and just very professional overall. You did a great job and we appreciate how it turned out."
- J Howel, Educational Outreach Academy, Red Bluff

"I have been a North State Parent for seven years now. My son was born in Chico in December of 2000. Since then I have tried to raise him the best way I know how. Your magazine has helped me to do that and more. I have been able to seek supportive classes, find fun events, and read informative articles and profiles on caring community members. It has been eight months since our second son, Michael passed away and it is always good to know there is support and life in the community surrounding you when you feel like your family has been fragmented for a while. I thank you sincerely North State Parent for all that you are."
- Janet Mangas, mother, Redding

"I've read the magazine for about 3 years. I use the magazine to get ideas for day trips on the weekend and for things to do during the summer. I am also the Volunteer Coordinator for Bidwell Park for the City of Chico and I utilize the magazine to advertise the volunteer opportunities in Bidwell Park throughout the year. I work with Lisa and she is really great about helping to get items into the magazine. This is just a good resource for families in general! It is really well-rounded with the information and opportunities it provides our different communities. "
- Lise Smith-Peters, Volunteer Coordinator, City of Chico Park Division

"As a writer and a mom, I am so impressed with how Pamela Newman and Lisa Shara put their values into practice every day. I watch them work tirelessly to provide a bright spot in the lives of north state children, families, and communities every month. They enhance the quality of our lives with a colorful, uplifting and thoughtful publication full of useful, interesting and current information. With their team, they have created an accessible and supportive network within the diverse and distant communities they serve. I am truly inspired by the vision and accomplishments of these hard working mothers who give voice to what matters to them month after month, year after year."
- Kristen Meyer Stroud, mother, parent educator and writer, Mt. Shasta

"North State Parent is a sponsor of the local children's theatre that I help out with and it is great that they are so supportive of the arts! I have had nothing but good experiences with the staff of NSP. From the marketing department to the calendar editor everyone is extremely helpful and more than willing to work with me on whatever I need. Thank you so much for providing this wonderful resource to families in the North State!"
- Katie Brown, Executive Assistant North State Symphony, Chico

"North State Parent has always been a valuable resource to my family. The articles are always very informative and creative. I've used the "going places" section for years, to keep up to date with activities and events going on in our community. The magazine does a great job of providing information geared towards a wide variety of children's ages.”
- Rindy Williams, R.N., Mother of three, Redding

"I have been reading the magazine for at least 12 years. We pick up the magazine every month and find out about what is happening for families such as ours. Now that my children are older and I have a business that advertises in the North State Parent, I check it regularly to see how I can better serve the families in our area. I met Pam Newman first when she was encouraging me to teach music classes for young children. After taking a break from teaching music classes, in order to go back to teaching in the public schools, I returned to teaching music classes and started The Music Farm. I immediately knew that advertising in the Parent was the only place I needed to advertise to get a good start. That's when I started working with Kim Roberson. Kim has been such a great support, from helping freshen up our ad design to getting NSP's graphic designer Marc to help design business cards, brochures and now my website-- he is amazing with the ad design. Kim is always positive and uplifting whenever I talk to her. I really appreciate what she does. Thanks, Kim!"
- Phoebe Fazio, mother and Director of The Music Farm, Redding

"I've been reading North State Parent since the beginning! The magazine has continued to promote the Anderson Library Story Time Program by always including it in the calendar of events. I've worked with Pam and she has always given me positive feedback and encouragement and reminders when I miss press deadlines. I have had many new parents who have come to Anderson Library Story Time after reading the calendar of events. Thanks to Parent Magazine for all the press we get!"
- Marty Mautz, Anderson Library Volunteer, Anderson

"I've been reading North State Parent Magazine for 8 years. I work with youth and find Parent a wonderful way to highlight activities being sponsored by the City of Anderson Parks & Recreation Department. It has been a pleasure working with all at Parent. My favorite article is the local story written by Anthony Novach. I believe youth in the community are not given enough of an opportunity to express themselves. I had a chance to read Anthony's article before editing and after, very little was changed or edited. This is very important in helping youth know that their stories matter. THANK YOU!"
- Pam Lewis, Recreation Supervisor, City of Anderson Parks & Recreation

"North State Parent has always supported Barnes & Noble in our events. Whether it's author signings, storytime, or the annual costume parade, without NSP none of those events would be as successful as they have been. I personally love NSP and always refer to you if someone isn't able to get their activities, projects or products known in the community."
- Leila Nankervis, Barnes & Noble Booksellers Community Relations Manager, Redding

"When I found out I was pregnant with my first daughter a friend told me about North State Parent Magazine for helpful information and the calendar of daily events. I have two daughters now and make sure to pick up North State Parent Magazine every month. I find the daily activities to be the most beneficial to me since my two girls are very active. As a mom, this magazine is a staple necessity that I would recommend to any parent. Happy Anniversary North State Parent!"
- Amy Gagnon, mother, Redding
Hello Pamela,

Let me first say thank you for bringing "North State Parent" into my home every month. I never throw the issues away keeping them as resources in raising my two children. I enjoyed reading about all the Birthday Resources you highlighted in last months edition.

My daughter recently had her 10th Birthday on January 31st. We have been talking to her over the last year about how much she always gets and how much she already has and how some presents seem to go to waste and never even get opened and enjoyed. After going thru our house for our last yard sale you could see it has really been sinking in with her. She took out toys that she felt possesive over, but never palyed with and realized she just has too much stuff.

In the last few months we have seen friends have to sell homes, jobs lost and activities cut back to the bare minimum or none at all because families cannot afford to keep active in everything. So when it came time for her birthday I suggested we dont do a big celebration (like we would usually do) but go for a bike ride with friends and requested no presents be brought. So we set to our email (free) invitations "requesting our friends presence, not your presents". Instead of people worrying about buying a gift and spending more than they could afford, we asked if they felt they needed to do anything, bring a small monetary donation that Savannah could gather and pass along to the Bella Vista Farms Animal Rescue.

We reserved a covered picnic area in Lake Redding Park ($25) and had all the children (about 25) bring bikes and helmets with all siblings invited as well. We rode to the Sundial Bridge (free) took some pictures and rode back to have homemade sandwiches ($30) and an ABC's scavenger hunt (free) and a sheet cake ($16). There were no presents brought, just donations! My daughter and friends had a great time, got some exercise and outdoors and ended up raising $250 to donate to Bella Vista Farms Animal Rescue.

The following Monday we drove to the farm and gave the donation to Chic, the owner. She was so excited and thanked Savannah so much for helping the animals instead of taking presents. The most amazing part was that my daughter did not even notice there were no presents and still is talking about what a great time she and her friends had!

Thank you for reading my long email, but I thought considering the economical climate happening right now it would also be nice to hilight some ways for local families to save some money, take in our free local sights as well as showing the kids how to give back to the community, all at the same time!
