art_0908_dfb2_large.jpgMy teacher is cool, writes Jasmine Wusstig about her fifth-grade teacher Mrs. Dana Dittman.  "She knows mostly everything.  I can't keep up.  If you asked her one question, I bet you a thousand dollars she will get it right."  Jasmine, of Juniper School in Redding, also says that she likes how Mrs. Dittman teaches math, because she goes slowly so everyone can understand, and she gives a lot of examples. North State Parent Magazine and LiceHelp4U (formerly Nit Zero) in Redding are pleased to present our Teacher of the Month for September 2008 to Mrs. Dana Dittman, fifth and sixth grade teacher at Juniper School in Redding.

"I am honored and humbled," says Mrs. Dittman.  "I don't know if I deserve this."

At age fifty-one, Mrs. Dittman says she loves her job as a teacher.  Her first job was to raise her children.  After they had grown, she went to college and earned her teaching degree.  She has spent the last 13 years continuing to impact the lives of children and says she can't imagine doing anything else.  "The kids are so much fun," she says,  "and they keep me young."

art_0908_dfb1_large.jpgBeginning her career later in life has proven beneficial for Mrs. Dittman.  "For me, I don't think I'd be as good and competent as I am if I had started when I was younger.  It's a demanding job and I feel that I am more patient."

In regards to the $500 donation she says, "We never have enough books and supplies.  I think this donation is awesome!"

Principal Margaret Arthofer agrees, "I'm thrilled to have more money to update our library," says principal Arthofer.  "It will help us continue to build readers."  She adds that she couldn't be more pleased with Mrs. Dittman's nomination.  "Mrs. Dittman is an incredible teacher and person, and is very deserving of the award.  She is positive, flexible and develops good relationships with students and staff."

One day in the fall of 2007, Michelle Wusstig of Redding saw a tearful little girl step off a school bus. Her head had been shaved.  Michelle recognized instantly that the bald head was a desperate parent's attempt to rid the child of head lice.

Michelle sympathized with both the desperate parent and the stricken child because her daughters had recently contracted lice at a slumber party and she knew how embarrassed she and her daughters had been.

As she watched the humiliated little girl, Michelle told herself that if she EVER saw another child with a head shaved because of lice, she would create a business that could help these children.

A few weeks later she saw another distressed child with a shaved head walking into the school. "That's it," she said-- and Lice Help 4U was born.

"We encourage people to just accept that head lice are around and that anyone can get them, and so not to be shy about seeking help," says Michelle.  "We find that clients are so relieved to rid themselves and their families of those pesky bugs that they often say they are very sorry they waited so long to get professional help."

Michelle has created a no-stress family- and kid-friendly environment, where privacy is respected and protected.  Her goal, she says, is to take the stigma out of having head lice, and to provide a solution to the problem as well as to educate families regarding the tiny critters' habits.  Parents and children are invited to watch a 15 minute video titled "Head Lice to Dead Lice" upon signing up for service.

Treatment can take from one to five hours, or even more in worst cases of infestation.  A lighted magnifying glass is used to help ensure a thorough examination and cleaning.  Only gentle, non-toxic products and methods are used.  During treatment, clients can watch TV or videos, play hand-held games, draw, etc.  A Certificate of Head Lice Treatment is given upon completion of the entire process.

Free head checks are available on the last Saturday of each month from 6:00 to 7:00 pm.

Lice Help 4 U is pleased to sponsor the Dollars For Books Program.  Michelle Wusstig joins North State Parent in congratulating Mrs. Dana Dittman as Teacher of the Month for September 2008.

To assist more families, Michelle has applied for non-profit status and is seeking donations to sponsor families in need.  Please call today if you're able to help.
