My name is Cassy. I am 14 years old and attend Chico Junior High School. I was born and raised in Chico, California. My father lives in New Hampshire; I have visited him every other Christmas and for the entire summer since I was 4 years old. I enjoy music, photography, running, and hanging out with my friends.
I have many different interests including horseback riding, dirt bike riding, beauty pageants, volleyball, dance, music, and gymnastics. My mom likes me to keep busy with a sport or project because I do better in school.
Last spring I became part of the Chico Cheer All Stars team for the 2008-2009 season. Cheerleading is one of the fastest growing sports in our community today. Cheerleading improves your balance and coordination, and strengthens your muscles. It helps reinforce team spirit and requires a lot of discipline. When I say discipline I mean the proper training and techniques of safety. It is not only about safety for yourself, but safety for the whole team. Safety is important in any sport, but it is especially important to remember when doing a stunt or tumbling. That is why it is enforced at every practice and competition.

The Chico Cheer All Stars represent our community. Girls and boys of all ages are accepted; it is not based on popularity or what you can and can't do. In our society today it is hard to be a teenager. There are increased pressures from school, friends, and what you have and don't have. I just want to be myself and have fun. Being part of this team has really boosted my self-confidence. I have made new friends and traveled to different places to compete against many great cheerleaders. I consider everyone on my team as part of my family. I know that if I turn to the one next to me I can count on that person to encourage, teach, support and accept me for who I am. I get really nervous before each competition, but when we step out in front of the crowd I know that the whole team becomes one. Every move, jump, stunt and tumble is together as a whole team. It is the greatest rush anyone can experience.
Tiffany Hayes is the founder and the coach of the Chico Cheer All Stars. She started this organization four years ago, and last year CCAS won at the National All Star Cheerleading Championship held at Walt Disney World in Florida. This summer CCAS is happy to announce the opening of the first all star cheerleading gym in Chico! Check the CCAS website for details. We are hoping with the new location that more will join and be a part of this fast-growing sport.
This is a sport that requires hard work and dedication. If you have the opportunity to come and watch a practice to see if you would be interested in joining, check out the web site at www.chicocheerallstars.com for the practice and competition schedule. I can go on and on about the wonderful experience I have had from cheerleading, and the confidence I have gained from this sport, but I have to do my homework.
Writer Cassy Southerland, 14, is a Chico native & loves to hang out with friends. She has a positive attitude about school and cheerleading and can't wait to attend Chico High this year. |
