art_0610_btc1.jpgOn Wednesday nights, rain or shine, Pam Lewis can be found lugging a bag of basketballs to the Anderson Middle School gymnasium. She has been doing this for the past eleven years. She opens the gym and supervises local drop-in kids, from seventh grade through high school, so they have a safe place to be active and play.

art_0510_btc1.jpgEarly every weekday morning, Fred Wichmann drives down the highway from Yreka to Mt. Shasta where he holds musical court in the Sisson middle school band room. Students arrive for jazz ensemble practice at 7:30 a.m. every morning except Wednesdays, when any student is welcome to come in early for extra help or to learn a new skill.

Born and raised in Chico, Mendonca warmly remembers how her Notre Dame School fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Beyers, and principal, Sister Jane Golden, uncovered talents in her she didn't know she had.
